Case Study: Mandy Morrison, Founder of Growing Outside, UK

Impact on the business


Taking part in the DiTEM programme has shown Morrison how digitisation can help to develop Growing Outdoors: “I am now at the stage of formalising all my processes, evaluating the type of products and services I offer, and the way to market them going forward; as I grow, I have secure foundations and a clear message of what we’re about.”

She adds, “The course has really helped to ensure my business is moving forward in the right way, with current digital practices and processes in place.”


As a result of completing the DiTEM programme, Morrison’s knowledge of digital marketing has increased dramatically, so much so that she is expanding her offer to include a product that is based entirely online. Morrison also points out that her “understanding of how to manage a business using remote, associate staff by utilising digital technology is much clearer, too.”


Measuring success can feel difficult, especially if there isn’t a direct outcome, but taking the time to explore what the future of the business looks like is important: “If you measure success in terms of the work that I’ve now done preparing my business for future growth then definitely [I’ve had recent successes]. I feel fully prepared to push forward this year with clear goals and targets, and I feel confident that growth will be sustained.”


Though Morrison gained a wealth of knowledge on digital technologies, she was able to develop her self-confidence through the programme, too: “The course has given me the confidence to take my business forward in a different way than I had imagined using digital technology. I now have more confidence personally in the digital world and feel I understand the technologies available far better.”


The training modules


Some of Morrison’s highlights were meeting and learning from peers on the DiTEM programme, though she still found the e-training modules incredibly useful: “All of the online courses offered excellent advice and training on many things I knew nothing about.”

Morrison feels that attending the DiTEM programme was “nothing but positive,” adding that “the course was well organised and the information and ideas generated were invaluable.”


She would absolutely recommend the training modules to micro businesses: “Running a small business can be quite lonely and isolated in terms of the latest technologies. To have the training and follow-up support is an opportunity no one should pass up… Get involved and see the time spent on the course as an investment.”





Company Background

After becoming a parent, Mandy Morrison retrained as a garden designer – “my new-found love of the outdoors in my early 30s combined with my artistic flare”.


Morrison was approached to work with a local school to redesign and plant an area with the children; she found the project incredibly rewarding and it led to a journey of falling in love with nature, and understanding the importance of encouraging children to garden.


After conducting regular gardening lessons with the children, Morrison felt much of the curriculum could be taught outside in a far more hands-on, engaging way, rather than inside the four walls of the classroom, and so Growing Outside was born.
